I think that the curfew is a good idea for the young people as well as the parents, it will deter the violence, and prevent parents from having to bury thier children at an early age, yes the City of Hartford has a responsibility, but it is also the parents responsibility to account for thier childrens whereabouts

I grew up in Hartford on Terry Rd. The lovely Liberals who have all fled the city are the ones to blame. They destroyed the inner city schools and stole the rest on their way to West Hartford, which a now a hole just like Hartford always was.

I am so happy somebody finally posed this question because people need to take responsibility for there kids actions. I was at the West Indian Celebration and I choose to get there early and show support for my community. I felt very safe because the police presence was very large and decided to leave around 3pm before the violence started. I hate the fact that one bad incident spoiled this whole event for everybody. Parents need to take responsibilty for there children and when there children get out of control they need to seek help asap before the streets get them. I have a son and its hard but I would never let the streets of hartford get control of my son. I’m so happy there will be a curfew starting on Thursday because if I see anyone under the age of 18 near my building or near the corner next to where i live i’m calling the police. I pay taxes in this town and i will not let no criminals make me live in fear.

Lets start with the questions you layed out for us.
1. Parents who don’t keep an eye on their teenagers, and let them roam the streets all night long? Where I came from are parents always knew where we were, even at 28 I still let my parents know what I am up to. Blame here goes on parents bottom line.
2. Those who turn away and won’t give police the names of the troublemakers? Do the right thing, set and example for your family, children and community is it that hard?
3. Property owners who refuse to maintain blighted buildings creating a perfect landscape for crime? Tear them all down it makes me sick driving thru hartford seeing these places. Case and point the building at the intersection of Trumbull and Main streeet. Is that what we want to show people who come into the city?
4. City Hall? Not all the blame can be put here part of it however does. The other part, on the people who commit the crimes.
5. The state for not keeping watch on ex-convicts? Big time on this. Tougher laws need to be put into the works here. We have death penalty in this state, how come I can not recall the last time it was put into place?
6. No one is to blame except for the criminals themselves. Not true, they have parents too. My parents did not raise a criminal, how do you explain the people that commit these crimes? One theory: Poor parental upbringing.
Although I did not grow up in city of Hartford I have friends and family that live there and spend plenty of time in the north end, my girlfriend lives off Blue Hills Ave near Mt. Sinai. I drive through the city and see people in the streets all hours of the day. Is this bad tough to say. Does it lead to trouble once agian tough for me to say. Remember the slogan: Hartford…New Englands Rising Star? That definately is not what comes to mind when I think of our states capital.

I say out loud and clear ‘ HE does not deserve this ‘ i blame the governor, the for not looking in to this matter personally . And if you notice she hasn’t said a word about this has not visited the family or the boy or posted a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of animals responsible for this violent act. she ‘s the one who should step in . And this curfew should have started sooner . I think a reward would loosen some lips . In a hurry.

I lived in the south end of Hartford as a young child. I walked blocks to school at St. Augustine’s with two other children at age 7 and 8, and I wouldn’t walk down the those streets today as an adult. 25 years ago, two parent households and families lived in my old neighborhood; neighbors knew neighbors and looked out for one another; houses were well kept; people took pride in where they lived. I don’t see examples of this in Hartford today, except in areas of yuppie interest, such as the West End.
The vast majority of inner city households (Hartford included) are headed by single parents (mostly women). These women are either busy working hard to try to support their families on their own, or they are in over their heads trying to parent their teenage children who turn a deaf ear to their words.
The real problem lies in how to correct this issue – how do you force parents to be parents? How do you force absentee fathers to stick around and to teach their sons to be respectful young men instead of punks? The answer is simple: we can’t.
The only thing that the city/state can do is to try to help the problem of violence with the only power that they have – enforce a curfew. No, it’s not a perfect solution, but it will probably keep some innocent people from becoming victims of violence. And, isn’t that worth it?

Parents and drugs. Who cares – less we have to pay for their health insurance when they are hospitalized. This is what stupid Obama is talking about when he says 17 million Americans without health insurance. Its the unmarried and drug dealers who have many kids with no husbands and those who are drug dealers who get shot and end up in the hospital. I wonder if the Paramedics or hospitals ask these people where there insurance card? I doubt it. This is the Healthcare crisis. Two simple solutions – move out of this country or get a friggen job.
