20 years ago this week WFSB was launching our coverage of the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. To show solidarity with the athletes and the CBS folks on assignment in the Land of the Midnight Sun, we wore some unusual clothing on the air. Denise D’Ascenzo procured a collection of the ugliest sweaters known to mankind, with enough wool to make a bedspread. I snazzed up the morning news with plaid jackets that I thought were pretty cool. Actually, this jacket I would wear today, but seriously, what were we thinking? We were dutiful soldiers, dressing as ordered.
This Sunday on Face the State, our flashback hauls out some of the ancient video of this garish garb. The clip you’ll see Sunday is a promotion for some of the I-team work I was doing back then. “You Paid for It” was a sub-brand if you will of the I-team, that investigated government waste. It was a big hit with the viewers, and we prepared special YPFI reports just for the Olympics.
Yours truly with then WFSB assistant news director Deborah Johnson
