Face the State Flashback: Lottery Shooting of 1998

image

Fifteen years ago this week we were covering a shocking story that was difficult to comprehend: a gunman had murdered four of his co-workers at the Connecticut lottery headquarters in Newington and then killed himself.

These types of crimes happened elsewhere, but not Connecticut. We later learned Matthew Beck was a steady employee, but disgruntled because of a failure to get a promotion.

In today’s flashback, you’ll see a report I filed from the scene on March 6, 1998. Sadly, that story was later dwarfed by the Hartford Distributors shooting of 2010, and the Sandy Hook massacre in December.

Face the State airs this morning at 11 on WFSB.
