Kara surprised me with a quick 24 hour trip to Washington last week, the highlight of which was a tour of the West Wing of the White House. We had the opportunity to peek into the inner confines of the the President’s home including the Oval Office, although no pictures were allowed. We were allowed to snap a picture outside one of the doors to the West Wing, and of course, we took the obligatory tourist shots outside the gates.
After that, we took a walk to check out the World War II memorial, and looked up the names on the computer there of Kara’s father and my grandfather, both of whom served in the European and Pacific theaters, respectively. From there we strolled the the new Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, which is very well done. The Washington Monument remains closed to visitors because of crack caused by this summer’s earthquake.
