Former Whalers Owner Gordon Has Advice for Lamont in NHL Hartford Quest

Will the troubled Arizona Coyotes franchise relocate to Connecticut and become the Hartford Whalers? That is the million dollar question, or should we say “billion” dollar question.

Here are the facts as we know them. The Coyotes are in need of a new arena in Phoenix and voters have rebuffed their request. The Whalers left Hartford in 1997 and fans have been missing them ever since. The governor says he has talked with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and told him our state is ready to welcome a team here and has an ownership group in place to make it happen.

I spoke to former team owner Richard Gordon for “This Week in Connecticut” on WTNH, who told me the desire is there for the restoration of a NHL team in Hartford, but wealthy investors are needed, who can’t worry about losing money. He said a new arena or a vastly renovated XL Center is essential and corporate support. The big companies in Hartford and beyond would have to commit to buying skyboxes.
