Eddie Perez’s Driver Arrested after Crash in Mayor’s SUV

Just what the embattled mayor of your capital city needs:  more bad press.

Today the city owned Mercury Mountaineer assigned to Mayor Eddie was sideswiped in a hit and run.  The driver who fled the scene was later caught at Hartford Superior Court where he works as a clerk.    But the bigger story is about the Mayor’s driver.  He was driving illegally!

Eyewitness News has learned when police responded to the scene they asked the Mayor’s driver for his driver’s license.  Turned out it had been suspended 8 years ago!

At last check, Pedro Bermudez was being issued a summons by HPD.   Bermudez has been employed by the city for about 9 months, hired by then chief of staff Matt Hennessy.   He is paid $40,000, according to the mayor’s present chief of staff Susan McMullen.

More on this story tonight on Eyewitness News.

  1. Oh, so it was a clerk who sideswiped the Mayor’s car, nice he got caught. The man who drives for the Mayor had his license suspended eight years ago, well, I would think this would have been checked before he became the driver for the Mayor. If the city is going to be the lax, I’ll drive for the Mayor! They may have to do some adjustments for me, like putting a brake pedal on the stearing wheel for me or the Mayor would need to close his ears during the ride, since evertime I’d put my right foot on my brake would cause me to say something that wouln’t be nice.

  2. What? For all this time that he has been driving for the Mayor he didn’t check to see if he had a valid drivers license? I just can’t believe that the mayor or his staff the hired this guy didn’t check to see if he had a valid drivers license.

Sounds like I would do a better job at running things from this laptop. At least I would had made sure that the Mayors driver was legal to drive. I’ m sure that he was making enough money to get a valid license. Shame on the mayor or his staff members that didn’t do thier homework.

  3. A driver who has had his license suspended eight years ago and is being paid $40,000 a year? The city is having problems with their budget and they are paying this guy to drive the mayor around?

With everything Mayor Perez is going through now, he should be paying for his own driver! I guess he doesn’t care about the budget problems in his own town. Bad enough that he is being charged for so many things that he hasn’t paid for at his own home! Bribes? Yeah nice job Mr. Mayor.

  4. Dennis,

My mother just brought something to may attention that I never thought about that fits with this valid driver license. Both of us use to work to the Department of Corrections, and drove state cars with inmates back and forth to court dates. We never had to give an update as to if we had a valid license or not in all the years that we worked for the Department.

Maybe this is a problem in the system where people are driving around state, town, and city cars and they are not requires once a year to show that they have a valid license.
You would think that a person driving the Mayor around or Governor would make sure that they have a valid license, but I guess that is not alway the case. So, to help the Mayor out a little maybe he didn’t know. The guy only had to show that he had a valid license when he was hired 8 years ago.

  5. I guess I’m still looking at this from a different point of view. If you are a driver for the Mayor or anyone in the government, you should have a valid driver’s license!

What if he had been the one who hit another driver? What if there had been a major crash with him involved?

I would think if you work for the Mayor, you would be honest in regards to something like your license being suspended. Unless, the Mayor knew and didn’t say anything either.
