House Family Aegean Adventure

I love history and ever since I first learned about Ancient Greece and Rome when I was a young student I’ve wanted to visit these places. I’ve been to Italy a half dozen times and finally made it to Greece with Kara and the kids. It did not disappoint.

We went to Athens, Mykonos, Delos and Santorini and the only thing we didn’t see was rain. The weather was perfect.

We began in the Greek capital and stayed in the Electra Hotel near an historic neighborhood called the Plaka. It is walking distance to the seat of the Greek government, stores, and restaurants and has spectacular views of the Acropolis. Our tour guide was Calliope, who escorted us through the winding centuries old streets to the Acropolis and the Parthenon. We did about 20,000 steps that day, more than 10 miles. We spent a few days in Athens then went to Mykonos in the Greek Isles where the Aegean Sea meets the Mediterranean.

In Mykonos we stayed at the Mykonian Avaton, which was built into the mountain and a short walk or shuttle to the beach. We sailed one day to the island of the gods, Delos. After a few days on Mykonos we took the ferry to Santorini, created by a volcano and is one of the most beautiful places on earth. We stayed at the Santorini Legend where the rooms are essentially caves built into the lava rock. Santorini was where we saw the most Americans, including NFL icon Troy Aikman, and a family from West Hartford we are friends with, but didn’t know they were there until we bumped into them in line getting gelato.

As for the food, it was excellent everywhere. I’ll pass on a recommendation I got from Ann Nyberg: 1800 Floga in the Oia Santorini. Excellent!
