On December 7, 1967 Antonina Uccello made history when she was sworn in as mayor of Hartford. Uccello, daughter of Italian immigrants, was the first woman elected mayor in Connecticut, the first elected mayor of a U.S. capital city, and at the time of her inauguration, one of the few female elected leaders in the world.
