Obamacare Comes to Connecticut on Tuesday

understanding obabacare

Obamacare, officially called the The Affordable Health Care Act, is coming to Connecticut on Tuesday. We discussed it at length last week, and still many of you have questions. So back for another appearance on Face the State is Kevin Counihan, the executive director of Access Health Care CT, the state’s new health care exchange. He’ll also be joined by Arielle Levin Becker of the Connecticut Mirror, one of the state’s foremost reporters on the subject and Zach Janowski, investigative reporter for the Yankee Institute.

We are also discussing the race for governor, and the firestorm created by Tom Foley’s appearance on Face the State two Sundays ago. We are joined by Hartford Courant columnist Kevin Rennie, author of the Daily Ructions blog. Also on the panel columnist Don Pesci, of the blog Connecticut Commentary: Red Notes from a Blue State. Rounding out our roundtable, Derek Slap, former television anchor turned capitol insider. Read more about Derek right here: http://dennishouse.wordpress.com/2013/09/27/life-after-television/

You can watch the entire discussion, this Sunday morning at 11AM on Face the State, only on WFSB Channel 3. Here’s a preview of our flashback, as we approach the 50 year mark since President Kennedy was assassinated. http://dennishouse.wordpress.com/2013/09/26/rubys-brother-jack-didnt-want-to-kill-oswald/

  1. The headline stated you could be fined for not signing up…ummm…I thought it was a tax. Supreme Court ruled it a tax. Regardless, the ACA is a nightmare! They call it the Affordable Care Act, but it is anything but affordable. Plus, if its so great, why has Congress forced it down our throats, and then exempt themselves from it? Even the Unions are trying to get out of it. It needs to be scrapped!i

    • Congress is not exempt from it. In fact, the only regulation relating to congress and the ACA *requires* them to use it! If the fine is levied by the IRS it can be considered a tax. How do you know it’s not affordable? Have you priced private insurance for yourself? While there may be some people who end up paying more, the majority of (admittedly anecdotal) reports I see are of people and businesses paying much less than they had been previously. Why don’t we wait for things to roll out, then see where the problems are, rather than speculate about what they *might* be. You may be surprised – this may actually work!

      • Actually…
Congress, staff, to keep federal health premium payments.
When Congress passed the health reform law known as Obamacare in 2010, an amendment required that lawmakers and their staff members purchase health insurance through the online exchanges that the law created. They would lose generous coverage under the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program.

The amendment’s author, Republican Senator Charles Grassley, argued that if Obamacare plans were good enough for the American public, they were good enough for Congress. Democrats, eager to pass the reforms, went along with it.

But it soon became apparent the provision contained no language that allowed federal contributions toward their health plans that cover about 75 percent of the premium costs.
But the OPM changed that so now they continue to get the subsidies, ( that we pay for) which means that Congress will escape the most onerous impact of law as it was written.
        So yeah exempt.

  2. So if you still cant afford healthcare how the hell are you supposed to pay a fine because you cant? I think there will be more than ONE family that can not afford this healthcare being slapped with fines whats more important feeding and clothing our children or paying more money to the state????

  3. There is nothing affordable about this, at least what I have seen as I look for health care coverage. Thousands of dollars in deductible, not to mention the co-pay which doesn’t count towards the deductible. So who is this going to be affordable for

  6. NO NO NO… Perhaps I would if I wasn’t a US Citizen..because I would most likely get it for free then, but since i”m AM a US citizen, its way cheaper for me to pay the fine. I only go to the doctor once a year for a physical. The government takes enough of our money.
