Denise D’Ascenzo Celebrates Her Silver Jubilee at WFSB

It was March 19, 1986 when Denise D’Ascenzo began her first day of work at Channel 3.         No news anchor in Connecticut television has been on the air consecutively at the same station longer than Denise.    Meteorologist  Bruce DePrest has been here longer, but he is just  one of those weather guys!   Al has been in broadcasting longer, okay, much longer (51 years,) but  his 27 year tenure on Channel 3 has come in two runs, ala Grover Cleveland.

I’ve known Denise since I first started in 1992, and we’ve been good friends ever since.    We’ve anchored some  big stories together, and enjoy discussing the news along with Big Al.   Back in the days of Broadcast House we had dinner together, and walked around the city between newscasts.    Even though we are serious journalists, we love to play jokes on each other,  laugh at stupid things (we never get tired of the movie “Dumb and Dumber,” and honestly enjoy every day we come to work.    We’ll admit, work isn’t as fun if one of us is off.

I reminded Denise today that this anniversary marks another big milestone for her.    For the first time, we now have employees at WFSB who were not even born when she started here!    Here’s to a quarter century, Denise!  Congratulations.

  2. I had the pleasure to meet Denise on a few occasions at Hoffman Audi. She was such a pleasant women. What you see of her on the news, is what you get in person. At the time I met her, my kids ( 6 and 3 at that time ) were ( and still are ) huge Scott Haney fans. When Denise came to pick up her vehicle, she had autographed pictures of Scott for them. Congratulations on 25 years Denise…..

  8. Congratulations to you, Denise…25 years is a commendable stretch. Continuity in broadcasting is so important…the revolving door approach doesn’t go over well with many viewers. I’ve been watching wfsb since I can’t remember when, and realize now that you began your career at wfsb the year before I graduated high school! Ultimately, we all pass the years together and you’ve been professional and lovely! Cheers!

  14. Denise to me is the epitome of what a news anchor should be. I lived in CT for quite a long time and was always impressed with Denise as an anchor. After living all over the world and watching widely broadcast international news I feel that Denise surpasses the best of them. Watching the news can be an unpleasant experience from the perspective of the actual news and from biases displayed by the newscaster. There is something about Denise’s delivery that makes the viewer feel they are in a good place despite the gravity of the news being reported, without any sense of bias, and with humanity and the utmost professionalism. She is beautiful in a credible and dignified way. I don’t know how WFSB got so lucky. Belated congratulations to Denise.

  20. I personally think that w/this award being such a big contribution to the news world & being nominated by a fellow newscaster, calling her by her last name a few times is an injustice to her. Being nominated for such a prestigise award, she should be called by her FIRST & last name. Thank You.

It’s been very enjoyable watching you, Dennis and Al, over the years. Channel 3 is my favorite news station for many years now. I’ve even been known to record a segment if I think I may miss something of interest to me.

You are admired and cherished for your years of service, and that’s not easy to come by this day and age. Thanks for hanging in there for us!

  25. Denise, you are a first class Lady. I enjoy watching you on the news and you and Dennis are great together. I was so happy when I get to meet you one afternoon. I go to Better Ct 2 to 3 times a week and meet a lot of people. Couldn’t meet you as you didn’t come in until 3 so one day I stayed in Rock Hill until 3:15 to go meet you. I am so happy I stayed as it was well worth it. Please keep that great smile, it is you. Good luck in whatever you do. Maybe I will see you again when I go to Better Ct. As I am in NC right now. Love and Bless you.

  26. After reading all of the comments about Denise, all I can say is, she must be a remarkable woman. I watch the Channel 3 news just because of her. I have never met her in person and will some day. I hope the little remarks from Dennis are all in fun although I have never seen her get upset, on TV.
