Perez won’t testify in his own defense

Word from Channel 3’s Eric Parker Hartford Superior is that Mayor Eddie Perez won’t take the stand in his corruption trial.    It is somewhat of a surprise considering Perez is an elected official, who has long professed his innocence.    Last time I spoke to the mayor before the trial he told he couldn’t wait to tell his side of the story.   It doesn’t make sense to me.  If you are innocent, what could possible be an argument against testifying?

I blogged about this early this last month.

The last two years of the corruption scandal have been hurting the city, as investors take a wait and see attitude.  The Hartford Business Journal had this to say about it

  1. Dennis-

It doesn’t make sense to you because you are not a lawyer and presumably have never been a criminal defendant. Do you really believe every defendant that chooses not to testify is guilty?

In the words of Johnny Mac, “you cannot be serious.”

Bad public relations move, yes, but standard trial strategy nevertheless.

And, by the way, the trial, regardless of the result, has done nothing but further solidify the general dislike of Hartford city government.

    Love your blog.

  2. Dennis, it doesn’t surprize me that the Mayor won’t take the stand. So, glad that you have been staying on top of this for your veiwers, and keeping us up to date as to what is going on. I think a lot of people are sick and tired of being sick and tired.

There is not need to get involved in stuff like this when you have everything going for you. My take in all of this that a lot of politicians let the power go to thier heads. I guess we will just have to sit back and see what the jury has to say once they have heard all of the evidence.
What I can say is that if I were sitting on that jury, and the Mayor didn’t take the stand to tell his side of the story, that would make me want to point in the direction of guilty.

Maybe I should run for political office! One thing for sure I would not have to say things about my military service that is not true, and I would not be telling people that you have to pay off real estate developers before we can move forward on city project, and my driver would have a valid drivers license.

  3. My mind is going back and forth on this. Yes, I wanted to hear the Mayor’s side from him. I might even wanted him to prove somehow about him beind dyslexic. Why wasn’t this brought up before in his term being Mayor?

Then again if he did get up on the stand, he would have been torn to pieces with all that has been said. He has ruined many things in Hartford due to all the bad publicity.

Thank you for having Eric on your show yesterday. It was great hearing from someone who has an insiders view of what is going on inside the court.

  4. I honestly believe that Adrian Peterson, Arian Foster, Ray Rice, Marshawn Lynch,
or Jamaal Charles should be your focus in the first round.
Alabama will try to rebound from their loss to the Sooners and rank fourth in the Sporting News college football preseason rankings.
During matches rush for football tickets goes
beyond any margin, and it becomes tough for the organisers
    to handle that.
